Hi and welcome! I've only been active on here for a short time myself, but we're mostly geared toward art sharing and personal websites, with a heavy emphasis on pixel art and retro web. There's also a healthy amount of personal chatter in one of the boards sections.

Not sure how familiar you are with how forums work, so I'm sorry if you know this stuff already, but anyway here's my explanation. You'll see that there are multiple sections on the homepage called "boards", these are organized by genre and contain the individual "threads" or discussion topics. Inside each thread are posts and replies. You can look around for some threads to reply to, read through the discussion, and see if you have anything to add. If there's a topic that you'd like to discuss and you can't find a thread for it, you can make your own!

Generally it's considered polite to spend a bit more time thinking about what you post on forums than on social media or instant messaging; forum posts stay visible a lot longer than messages on those other types of platforms. It's also a much slower form of communication than either of those, so don't expect instant replies, but you can generally expect more high quality/engaged replies.

I certainly have been enjoying my time here so far and I hope you do too!

I really love this explanation. Forums were my first "social media" and it's definitely different from modern, fast-paced and individualistic profile-based models. It's more like being at a small gathering than a large party, as it were- it's about the conversations, both speaking and listening! It's something I miss a lot about the vibe of the old web, because it asks you to slow down and engage more.

I hope you enjoy your stay! I'd love to know about some of the hobbies and stuff you're into!
