I guess I just had many periods where I didn't watch anything at all, especially around 2014-2018 I'd say, but still
Omg you're in the exact same boat as me... my MAL has number of completed shows as around 320+ ish if I remember correctly  There's a lot of classic / popular shows I still really need to watch, but I've accepted that I'll probably watch anime for the rest of my life anyways, so it's not a big deal  I also go through periods where I just read books or play games instead
kupus wrote: Mon Aug 19, 2024 8:13 am Dedede is one of my favourite manga... Despite Asano Inio kind of being a meme his manga really was a staple of my teenagehood and idk, he manages to capture my teenage self's feelings and vibes too well, which I'm not too proud to say considering he's now a staple among baby incels and abused mentally ill girl larpers LMAO . I started reading dedede as soon as it came out, and finished reading when I was about the same age as the characters (and right during the pandemic too) so it managed to mark my entrance into adulthood. The anime adaptation is surprisingly good for how condensed it is, although I'm yet to finish it. I really like how they translated his art style into the anime.
Yeah Ik he's kind of a meme, especially with how popular Goodnight Punpun is, but I really enjoy his work lol. I like what I like :uwu: I really relate to Kadode's strong feelings of justice, especially when I was a kid. I like how did translated his art style, but the manga backgrounds are incredible!! It's been a very enjoyable watch so far :wuv:

Omg staphhh :wuv: :uwu: ORZ, I am still a shoujo student lmao.... but seriously thank you and tell me how you like it!!!
CooperationIsKey wrote: Fri Aug 16, 2024 2:20 am Oh they definitely didn't invent the concept; in fact a favorite anime of mine is .hack//SIGN (pronounced dot-hack-sign) and it predates SAO by quite a bit and did a very similar idea. And honestly it probably predates that, lol. (btw .hack//SIGN is awesome and has an INCREDIBLE soundtrack and I highly recommend it!!)
.hack//SIGN is a huge one on my list, the character designs are so 🔥 ESPECIALLY the blue girl with the trianges... I love characters with facial markings!! :wuv:

Anyways, what are some genres, plot tropes, and/or character tropes you guys like? I love white / purple / silver- haired nonhuman characters LOL

I am still pretty early into it (about ep. 9) but so far I really like it! It's so sweet and Erika is the best lol. I will let you know more as I get further along. Favourite tropes? Not sure if this is a trope but I prefer more "realistic" looking anime or I guess more stylized, stuff like Ergo Proxy, Samurai Champloo, and Witch Hunter Robin where characters have more defined noses, different face and eye shapes and so on. Or stuff that is very stylized like Sairaya Goyou or Kaiba.

It's like 20 years old and I think largely forgotten but it was the first "yaoi" anime I ever came across. I only saw the first episode or two thanks to the dvd that came with the NewType magazine I occasionally picked up. I do have the whole thing now, but I wish I could find better quality than 480p.
ok, i am really dating myself, but gravitation was one of the first anime i ever watched (and definitely the first BL) back when it was fairly new  i actually just re-watched it earlier this year, and it sent me down a SPIRAL. i have a lot of fondness for it due to nostalgia, but it's writing and it's translation are very much a product of when it was written (90's yaoi localized in the very early 2000s, one of the first BL to gain popularity in the west) which makes it both super interesting from a historical perspective, but also could be off-putting for a lot of people now. also, the music goes SO hard holy shit lol.

i could only find a low-quality hardcoded sub that was definitely translated in like 2002, and experiencing that as an adult now who has consumed a ton of media translated from japanese to english (both old and new) it reminded me of how literal and stiff translations used to be. i'm not an expert in the japanese language by any stretch of the imagination, but i know enough now to see how some things were just not really conveyed well (or at all), and how that contributed to a lot of confusion & ambiguity in the plot, etc. it was also interesting to see some of the themes & motifs you just no longer see, and how the depiction of BL & representation of queer characters in media has changed so much over the years.

ok sorry i am rambling, but my mind was absolutely buzzing!!!! when i rewatched it, and nobody i know these days has even heard of gravitation lmao

um, so yes i like anime lol. i haven't watched in the last few years, but it was hugely important to me as a kid. sailor moon & card captor sakura were two of theee biggest influences on young jessica, and informed a lot of my style, interests, and even friends. i loved shoujo & josei, and now i guess i mostly read manga on my phone before bed lmao. i haven't found many recent series that captivated me in the same way the oldschool ones did - it feels like everything new i encounter these days is targeted towards straight cis men, and not very interesting to me, and my tolerance for a lot of tropes & depictions has just changed as i've gotten older, but there are some that i've enjoyed. the most recent one i watched was frieren: beyond journey's end, which was very cute & peaceful :) i'm also reading a yuri manga a friend of mine recommended to me the other day called the summer you were there, which has been good so far, but we'll see...

I actually just rewatched Gravitation (Anime + OVAs) and drew some Shuichi fanart!

THOUGHTS: I enjoyed watching it! I'm an older Zoomer, so it also gave me that older yaoi vibe lmao. I would look up lists of like "best yaoi anime" on Google, try to find them online, and then watch in like 360p when I was 12   What I liked: the OP and ED, the goofiness / cheesy, Shuichi being stupid! I'm not a huge fan of soap opera plots or semes being hot and cold ("you're mine" *5 seconds later* "I hate you!"), but I turned my brain off and embraced it! The music goes so so so hard. I kind of want to see if I can find raws of the manga now lol. Jessica, did you know that Gravitation is apparently getting a retranslation too?

I also feel you with your tastes in anime. I like almost every genre of anime, but I also like to stick with Josei / Shoujo as I get older.... but I love *almost* everything!

How are we all feeling lately with anime? Any seasonal watches for Fall 2024? There's the 7th season of Natsume Yuujinchou, and I need to catch up (along with a billion other things on my backlog   ) I've actually been watching some episodes of the beloved cult classic anime Futurama lately! Fry-kun and Bender-kun await me!

The roster for fall is looking... not very good. but that's just my opinion! I really like the Natsume Yuujinchou manga but havent seen any of the anime, I should soon...

I'm only watching Chi.: Chikyuu no Undou ni Tsuite this season. But its actually pretty cool, its not totally historical but kind of about going against the grain that really did happen in the 15th century, when science and pursuit of truth was anti-religious and people were horrifically punished for "heretic action". actually ever since i watched more about media that maintains the 'status quo' (like marvel, where every hero, who is the good, aims to return things to the imperfect but apparently still "good" status quo instead of seeking real fundamental change) i've tried to find media in which the opposite is the plot driver. the opening song is so so good. also the mc is 12 but looks so middle aged LMAO.

i am super excited for winter 2025: sakomoto days, babanbabanban vampire, and most importantly, medalist. if anyone hasnt read medalist yet, please its so good, read it!! i think i started it for a MRC challenge on MAL in 2020 or smth but now there are loads of chapters! its wholesome, the art is beautiful, ice skating (which i usually dont care about but now i do lol), and great characters. i also thought to check out the honey lemon soda manga and if its good maybe keep up with the anime too?

omg futurama... i never finished it but its such a fun show. i think its one of the few that i still like from the funny adult cartoon sitcom era (like simpons, family guy etc). also still like bobs burgers.

I also agree that this fall is a snoozefest. There's the new Love Live for me too, but I don't think there's really anything else or that it would be popular outside of Love Live fans. (Lots of people thought Love Live Superstar S2 was bad lol).

I will check out Chi and metalist if you recommend them!! :D I've seen people mention Chi before. I really like the art style!

I am watching the anime of True Beauty, the animation is bad and the voice acting is also bad and the animators are as lazy as webtoon authors.

There was a ridiculous scene in the anime, when the two mls were at a pajama party with the fl and two girls, they were wearing animal jumpsuit pajamas and one of the guys said that they were leaving and undress his pajama, but he was still wearing his normal clothing inside, then the other guy did the same but he just removed the pajama like those velcro stripper clothes and both left, the camera zoomed out and both pajamas that were supposed to be on the floor, disappeared. So they're this lazy  (hope my description made sense because I'm not English native and I still have trouble describing stuff lol)>

But I still liked it somehow, I have seen worse anime before and I can forgive them because they aren't used to make anime, and I am used to read webtoons with lazy illustrations too

I thought for a moment that there was a anime for Futurama lol I even googled it lol

Futurama was the first tv show not anime that I watched all seasons, I only missed the final season because it aired later. But I've been meaning to rewatch everything and watch the last season. Fry and Bender were my favourite characters in the series, I can add Leela too because she was Fry romantic partner and I always thought that they looked cute together :wuv:

Yes, so I really am waiting for winter 2025 becuz this season is meh... I do not know much about Love Live but I hope you enjoy it this season  Chi is pretty good so far, its weird but intriguing! Honestly the medalist anime is looking sort of average animation wise but the manga is to die for...!! :wuv: :wuv: :wuv:

As lazy as webtoon authors, velcro stripper clothes LMAO, damn   TBH, I saw that and thought it looked kinda not-so-great quality-wise lol. To each their own though. And your description makes complete sense, I tend to notice those budget-saving animation tricks and mistakes a lot more now.

I remember being a kid watching Pokemon and getting seeing episodes with off-animation and thinking "something looks.... wrong". Naruto was also bad with that at parts

I don't know if I watched all seasons, but I was obsessed and watched as many episodes as I could when I was younger! It was my favorite show as a middle school along with Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide :wuv: I'm watching an episode before bed to relax. Fry and Leela are cute together and all the cast makes me laugh :D

Btw, the new Re:Zero arc right now is pretty great ngl. I know that lots of people here probably don't like isekai stuff... But I swear lol. If Subaru annoys you (like me), you can at least be amused by him dying in many different gruesome ways! :D

I randomly remembered the Uzumaki anime adaptation that's been in development hell for years, and found out that it was FINALLY being released. I've watched all the episodes so far, and... I'm a bit disappointed. Fwiw I love Junji Ito's work, and it's been years since I've read the manga. But the pacing of the anime is SO fast. They really should have made more episodes. I can feel that the finale is going to be awful. Moreover, while the animation in the first episode is decent, it nosedives HARD in the second. The contrast is insanely jarring. I'm probably going to reread the manga before the final episode just to feel a bit better because damn, they messed this up. I think I can still appreciate the horrifying moments here though. I love that kind of unsettling horror that doesn't rely too much on cheap jumpscares (mostly coz I fall for them easily lmao).
