Today, I’ve decided to ponder over older image editors and art thingies, and for nostalgia’s sake, I’ve gravitated towards the DSi camera
Honestly, I never really pondered Nintendo’s choice on making the DSi camera app so wacky and fun to mess with, only to realize they were quite ahead of their time :’D
It’s practically wild how you can edit pictures by drawing on them, changing their color, and liquifying them in the crustiest fashion - young me was right when taking pictures was the best pastime x]
I also had realized I could make edits of drawings I made in my DSi, and add them to my site in a different way. Heck, it almost feels like photoshopping, but on a much more unique scale.
Do you guys have any nice memories on toying with older image edit programs too? What’s your nostalgia?

Oh nooo! It’s such a shame you can’t use them :’] Part of me feels I could take requests on edits and send them here later, since I’ve been really loving this kind of thing.humanfinny wrote: ↑Sat Aug 31, 2024 2:38 pm My two DSs dont have cameras!!

Also, your drawings look so good!! Oooh, I love the mood in them and how soft the rendering feels. You really explored most of its potential there

thanks much, the softness was not planned but thats ok haha! its super surprising how much such a little device can handle.

Re: DSi camera edits + older image editors!
I wonder if there's an online version of the DSi editor app? I bet some hardcore Nintendo fans would be interesting in preserving the software
I remember using a lot of older online photo editors when trying to edit pictures (mainly make them pink + add sparkles) when I was younger. I used GIMP and a verrrrryyyy buggy very version of Paint Tool Sai that I found online too I had an old hand-me-down laptop from a relative too, and boy did that thing get overheated....
Earlier than that, the "family computer" we shared was super slow and looked like the picture above. I remember playing Webkinz and Neopets a lot on that thing. The computer had the John McAfee bullshit installed on it too. Even as a kid I knew that John McAfee was the real virus lmao. I'm pretty sure I made the computer worse too because I went on "bad" websites and tried to download these colorful mouse cursors secretly
I'll probably quote this post in a nostalgia thread somewhere, but I feel so bad for gen alpha.... I'm younger than a lot of people here, but it was a lot of fun experiencing the internet as a kid

I had the DS lite so i missed out on all the cool DSi exclusives - they looked so fun! I wanted to play flipnote studio so bad haha
The art looks amazing! I remember 3d colors on the 3DS, i love the way the rendering looks on the art from it.
I also grew up with a family computer like that, it was so unimaginably slow i don't remember which photo editors i used back then, but i remember downloading cursors & making everything super customized too. we had something called Microsoft Plus! that came with a bunch of cool backgrounds, screensavers, & icons, and i'd change things around all the time with it

Re: DSi camera edits + older image editors!
my family computer looked a little more like this:
i was a quizilla fanatic, on there like everyday. i actually never played webkinz or club penguin or anything but me and all my classmates played 51mole. im gonna reveal that my birth year is 1999 which makes me old/young to some, im not sure what the median age here is haha. my sister is 11 years younger than me, we are technically in the same generation (which is wild) but I do feel really bad for her in terms of the tech and internet situation today. doesnt help that most of her friends are online and she doesnt get on with anyone at school... so she is doing a lot of time on the pc or phone which wouldnt be too bad if she was doing something creative and active but a lot of her time is just consuming content which sucks...
Re: DSi camera edits + older image editors!
Honestly me too… I think it’s possible to use DSi emulators for this kind of thing, but I can never be sure. People are very enthusiastic towards older tech, so it’s a cool thing to think aboutAngelEyeSprings wrote: ↑Wed Sep 11, 2024 3:04 pm I wonder if there's an online version of the DSi editor app? Ohh, I see- I used to use GIMP in the past as my main art software! And a bit of SAI 2 nowadays as well - I really love all the blending brushes + a graphite one I managed to find in a DA bundle!I remember using a lot of older online photo editors when trying to edit pictures (mainly make them pink + add sparkles) when I was younger. I remember having a very old laptop too… one from 2005 It wasn’t built for gaming, but it worked well for using Krita, MS Paint and other obscure drawing apps. I didn’t want to let go of it, since I liked its design, but it wasn’t performing well anymore
Your family PC reminds me a bit of the one me and my family used in the 2000s… I’m an early 2000s kid, so I grew up with Windows XP, messing with MS Paint and looking into cute GIF websites with my parents I also loooved a flash game page that was raw in HTML, but had a crap ton of games in it. I kinda miss some of this nostalgia…
I only got around to playing Neopets on a better home PC, even if I only ever played the flash games in it haha- the temptation to try to play it again is still real, even if I don’t have time :’]
And yeah… me too… internet nowadays feels boring, since there isn’t much of that exploration factor old web used to have. It’s still hidden somewhere in there, but it’s not the same :pI'll probably quote this post in a nostalgia thread somewhere, but I feel so bad for gen alpha.... Re: DSi camera edits + older image editors!
Omg I think I know what you're talking about! When you would having a matching Windows theme with the icons! AAA, do you remember how you customized your setup lol? I loved when people changed their computers like:jeith wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2024 5:35 pm I also grew up with a family computer like that, it was so unimaginably slow i don't remember which photo editors i used back then, but i remember downloading cursors & making everything super customized too. we had something called Microsoft Plus! that came with a bunch of cool backgrounds, screensavers, & icons, and i'd change things around all the time with it
Your age is very close to what mine is lol (Older?) zoomers unite! I remember Quizilla too! I remember lots of quizzes like "What color are you?" "Are you a bad student?" "What's your elemental sign?".... It kinda reminds me of an eariler version Buzzfeed quizzes I liked to take in high school lolhumanfinny wrote: ↑Tue Sep 17, 2024 8:19 am my family computer looked a little more like this:

I hope your sister is okay. That age was really rough for me too when I was younger, especially with making friends and fitting in. Kids can be cruel. I'm worried about Gen Alpha and younger Gen Z (?) consuming information constantly without ever thinking critically or thinking for themselves as a whole. I guess that's how Millennials probably saw us though? I think every public school should teach about marketing, advertising, group-think, and how social media works to kids... (But I also just bought an expensive, useless anime figure, so I can't get too high up on my soapbox lol)
OOOH, I might try SAI 2... I just use Krita nowadays, but that sounds like a good option! I loved the blending brushes I have found memories of drawing on my laptop as a teen and hyping myself up while doing it... and then looking at my finished drawing and realizing it was not as fabulous as I had hoped lmao Yesssss MS Paint too!NinAcTi0N wrote: ↑Tue Sep 17, 2024 3:43 pm Ohh, I see- I used to use GIMP in the past as my main art software! What kind of flash game site did you play on? Outside of Neopets / Webkinz, I was on CoolMathGames, AmericanGirl's website, EngineeringGames (???), and somewhat on CartoonNetwork's website lol... Oh and Nickelodeon's website!
ALSO, apparently there's a website that has allll of these old flash games?! LINK EXAMPLE (I loved this game, and thought the background music was a bop!) I'm def adding this site to my links page
