I'm gonna revive this thread, what's everyone been reading recently? I read The Age of Innocence for a book club. I could probably make an entire blog post about what I liked and didn't like. The language was beautiful and descriptive. I felt frustrated a bit for the characters in the book, but not too much. They are so much better off than everyone else. (If you've read the book, you'll know what I'm talking about.) The romance plotline also frustrated me, but that's intentional and purely personal taste I'm not the kind of person to read angsty slowburn stuff! It was a great book overall!

I'm supposed to read The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven by Sherman Alexie next. Kinda excited to see what's in store! Also arranging a silent reading party with some people this weekend yayayayay! We'll see how that goes....

I havent read a romance in years... maybe its time too. I think I might be the only person who loves slowburn lol. Like, it can take 300+ for characters to get together, I don't care. Maybe they pine forever, fine by me

ah thats nice, hope the party goes smoothly! I just finished the first Circle of Magic book by Tamora Pierce, its just a pretty cute fantasy book for middle schoolers probably lol. Now Im reading Three Body Problem because my brother has been bringing it up like every five minutes for two years now so ...

I didn't read a book in a good while, but recently I wanted to re-read Murakami's After Dark but I ended up returning it to library to not keep it for too long. Right now I'm planning to re-read The Rat Trilogy incl. Dance, Dance, Dance. Especially Hear the Wind Sing/Pinball 1973 as I honestly prefer his work being more realist and with weird shit around female characters ngl. He can write great settings, seamlessly weave pop-culture references and build the atmosphere but I do wish he tried to write better women for real.

i totally feel you on this. i love his writing, but he often rubs me the wrong way. i really loved the non-fiction i've read by him, though, especially underground. i feel like his style and storytelling prowess really come through in an interesting way.

ahhhh i've been meaning to read this for awhile (its sitting on my kindle), and now you've reignited my interest! i went through a period where i was really into reading early literature by female writers, and this one came up a lot.

i loooove reading i've been on a fantasy kick for a few months now, and right now i'm in the middle of two series: one i've been listening to via audiobook with my boyfriend (gormenghast by mervyn peake, which is a gothic-style fantasy series from the 40s/50s that i'd somehow never heard of until my friend recommended it, but it's SO good and weird in an amazing way. it's been making me laugh sooo hard), and one i'm reading by myself (the dream thieves by maggie stiefvater, which is a YA fantasy series that reminds me a lot stylistically of some of neil gaiman's work, except it has a realistic female lead and i like it far better )

i like listening to audiobooks with my boyfriend because it gives me someone to talk to about what i'm reading, but i get frustrated because i can't read as fast as i'd like (he falls asleep immediately if we listen before bed, and zones out a lot when we listen during the day...lmao ugh) whereas i power through books when i read on my own because i get so absorbed.

i'm also in the middle of a book of poetry (all the poems by stevie smith) but i read poetry very slowly. i feel like i have to use my brain in a very different way with poetry, and i spend a lot of time dwelling on a single poem in the same way i'd consider a single book. i have a bad habit of starting a bunch of books and reading them all at once, so i have some others that are mostly on hold right now these days i try to finish things before i start anything new.

I've been on a massive reading slump but it's okay! I did read two books in the past two months though - "If I Had Your Face" by Frances Cha and "The Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnett. (I didn't realise until now that they have the same first name ) Really enjoyed both of them! IIHYF was a great insight into Korean beauty standards and societal expectations. The Secret Garden was just fun! I didn't really like how by the end of the book, Mary was ignored though. She was our protagonist at the beginning of the book, and I thought concluding with her made more sense. I still have my copy of Pride and Prejudice sitting in my room, staring at me menacingly...

okay I will add it to my list then! Yes, I havent had anything spoiled. My brother keeps raving about it and he's like 'then this cool things happen but I wont spoil, and then this thing, and then that thing etc etc.' lol so its hyped up but without the details for me haha

I have finished reading 100 years of solitude this week which I was taking forever to finish (I started reading in 2019, but read everything from the start in the last year). And it was mainly because I decided to read it in Spanish but I don't know how to speak Spanish and never read anything in it before. But my native language is Portuguese (highly similar to Spanish), I had some classes in middle school and high school and I wanted to improve my language skills so I did it anyway by sheer will/force (I used the dictionary a lot).

I chose this book because it was so famous (and someone on goodreads said that it looked like the sims lol), but I thought that it was weird, creepy and gross (I'll put it in spoiler the gross stuff just in case).

It had too much grooming, incest, rape and paedophilia, also a too much women were mistreated, and a lot of them had to prostitute themselves to survive

So I don't get why people praise this book so much, I wasn't expecting to read this type of stuff. But I think that besides this, I actually liked how how the book told the story of a family, even if the actions of the characters were really weird and I couldn't understand the motivations of anyone (I think that everyone was too much selfish and prideful and that's probably why everyone was lonely), then the magical realism was okay (I used to watch telenovelas as a kid so I am kinda used to it by now).

Well I'm a little more than halfway through the book I previously talked about, Boy Robot by Simon Curtis. It's really good but I suffer from terrible "put down the book and immediately forget about it"-itis. XD;

I'll finish it eventually.

I'm finally getting back in to reading (nobody would believe I did a literature degree years and years ago!) and I'm currently halfway through 'The Night Circus', has anyone else read it?
